Shrinking Borders in the South China Sea

Shrinking Borders in the South China Sea

Chinese expansionism into the South China Sea continues to creep into other nations sovereign claims. This has been accelerated by the discovery of a wealth of natural resources in the area.

UN rulings and other seemingly unenforceable dictates have had little effect on anything other than Beijing's rhetoric. These actions have demanded more US involvement to ensure international shipping and airspace remains open.

As trade relations between the US and China chill the military posturing of the Chinese continues to escalate, inciting military responses from neighboring nations like Vietnam and The Philippines.

While the creation of a series of military installation islands in an unknown body of water may seem inconsequential to most Americans, this developing Chinese control of major shipping lanes could dramatically upset the economic balance of our global economy.
