The earliest accounts of the cultivation and medicinal exploitation of Cannabis can be traced back to the third millennium BC and found in the records of both Chinese and Egyptian medicine. The plant species that fall under the genus Cannabis, such as sativa and indica, have numerous reported health benefits, and parts of the plant and extracts can be inhaled, ingested, or used topically. Although most people associate the term “cannabis” with marijuana,Cannabis sativa actually includes both marijuana and hemp. The primary active components of Cannabis are called cannabinoids, and although the plant produces a variety of these compounds, the two most abundant and well-known of these are THC and CBD.
In this article, we provide a brief overview of some of the evidence-based health benefits of CBD.
I'm sitting in an undisclosed location in the desert. I have a lot of time to think. We get a lot of emails asking what program is best for an individual. Those questions made me realize that a lot of people don't actually know why they are going through the motions of working out. Jamming out to some Steve Earle and on my third cup of Turkish coffee, you guys are about to get another window into my furiously spinning ADD brain. Today I'm going to explain the most important thing you can possibly identify in your training: The reasons behind your striving.
A discussion in the SOFLETE Team Room got me thinking about all the stupid things I’ve done that could have shortened my stay on this earth. Sometimes those things were necessary or at least unavoidable. The extremities of combat or the exigencies of professions like emergency services place practitioners in situations that demand an acceptance of risk. But a lot of times my narrow escapes were the results of being under-planned, under-trained, or under-aware.
There isn’t any medication that exists that is able to confer the same health benefits that regular meditation and exercise are able to offer. The key, however, lies in the word “regular.” This is why when one meditates it’s called practicing – meditation isn’t supposed to be something you do once, or even once in a while; it’s supposed to be a consistent practice.
Regardless of which type of meditation you choose to try, I sincerely encourage you to try something if you haven’t already. There are clearly many benefits and exactly zero disadvantages to trying it unless your free time would be better spent doing something else that will make you a better person and improve your quality of life.
I used to run too fast. My bi-weekly jog always—always—escalated into a Forrest-Gump-like pace. A weekly day or two of long-distance, low-intensity cardio work can not only improve your recovery and heart health, it can also take time off your faster runs and improve your lifts.
The late, great neuroscientist Victor Frankel once said, “Between stimulus and the response, there is a space, and in that space is our power and our freedom”.
We have the power to focus our attention in the present moment to shift our reactions. In making that conscious choice to intentionally place our attention, we can create the power to transform our current reality and empower ourselves beyond measure.
First, to understand what is meant by “the present moment”, we need to look at its opposite, which is commonly called “Autopilot”. Simply put, Autopilot describes any time that your mind is not focused on what is right in front of you.
Life has taught me that there are always those members of a population that can’t follow simple rules. Here’s where our extra thirty pounds, five inches, and fifty percent more physical strength can actually be of benefit. When you observe a woman enduring that sort of thing, step up and tell the source to KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT AND MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. And if she doesn’t want to engage with you, even after your chivalrous act, you KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT AND MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS too. This is simply behaving like decent humans. It’s easy. It’s what we owe the women in our lives and it’s how we become better as men and a species.
Give your goals a face, something that once achieved, it can be recognized. This process is simple, yet methodical, calculated and systematic, like a well-run science experiment or clinical research. This doesn’t mean that you have to wear a lab coat, but you do need to be enthusiastic, disciplined, dedicated and probably a little creative.
Mental toughness is what makes champions.
That’s what we’ve all been taught anyway. It seems like everyone believes that “tougher” is better. Leaders and coaches are always preaching about how to develop mental toughness and how people need to “toughen up”.
I think there is a huge misconception out there. If you have the wrong idea about mental toughness, your thoughts and actions towards developing it can actually be harmful.
